
To use Voxalot with most hardware phones / ATAs use the following settings:

If you set up your ATA to be registed to VoXaLot, you will also need to change your ATA dial plan. This dial plan string will work best.

Configuring your ATA to use Voxalot
There are several different ways you can set up your Analogue Telephone Adaptor (ATA) to use Voxalot. Which one you use will depend on what type of hardware you have, which VSPs you use and how you want to use Voxalot.
ATAs and Registration
ATAs are normally either a self contained hardware device or an ATA/router combined hardware device. Most ATAs only allow you to register the device with one VSP. When an ATA is registed, it "keeps in touch" with the VSP to confirm that the ATA is still connected to the VSP. The concept is similar to a mobile phone that stays connected to the mobile telephone network so that the telephone provider knows that your hardware is there ready to take a call.
Making your Phone Ring
Your ATA is designed to make your telephone handset ring if someone wants to call you. There are 2 ways it can do this:
- You can register your ATA with a VSP by creating an account, and then configuring your ATA with the account details provided by your VSP so that the ATA is registered to that VSP account. Your VSP cannot make your ATA ring unless your ATA is registered to your VSP account.
- If you have an advanced ATA, you can configure the ATA to accept direct inbound IP dialling from the internet, bypassing your VSP all together. If your ATA is capable of accepting direct inbound IP dialling, you will still be able to setup inbound IP dialling and still register your ATA with a VSP. The SPA-3000 is capable of doing this. Direct IP dialling is beyond the scope of this tutorial. For more information on configuring your ATA for direct IP dialling you can visit voipstuff.net.au.
VSPs and Registration
All VSPs require your ATA to be registered to their network in order to make your ATA ring. In addition, some VSPs require your ATA to be registerd to their network before you can make an outbound call.
If you have a DID with your VSP, you will probably want to register your ATA to that VSP so that people can telephone you using the PSTN network. However you don't need to have a DID for someone to be able to ring you on your ATA. You can set up an account with a VSP that doesn't offer DIDs (like Voxalot) and you will be given a SIP URI. Your Voxalot SIP URI is your 6 digit UserID followed by our domain. ie 123456@us.voxalot.com. If you configure your ATA to register to Voxalot, anyone that sends a SIP call to your SIP URI will be able to make your phone ring. Anyone with a VoIP service can make a SIP URI call by using SIP Code Dialling. Anyone with a telephone can make a SIP URI call by using SIP Broker PSTN dialling.
There are a number of reasons you would want to keep your ATA registered with another VSP.
- If your VSP requires you to have your ATA registered to be able to make outbound calls, then you will need to register you ATA to that provider (or find another provider).
- If your VSP provides you with a DID, you will probably want to register your ATA to that provider to allow incoming calls to ring your ATA.
- Some VSPs don't allow inbound SIP URI calls and also require you to have your ATA registered to them to make outbound calls. If this is the case the only option you have for receiving inbound SIP URI calls that will ring your ATA is to use inbound IP dialling (or change VSP).
Seting up your Hardware as a Gateway
Some hardware devices like the SPA-3000 allow you to configure a number of gateways for different VSPs. To configure your Voxalot as a gateway you should add the following to a free gateway on the Line 1 tab. In this example, 555555 is the Voxalot UserID.

NOTE: Change gw1 to reflect the right gateway slot.
To use Voxalot with this dial plan, you would first dial #1, wait for the dial tone, then dial your number.
To test your setup, simply call:
#1 (you should hear a continuous second tone) then dial *600
You should hear the Voxalot echo test.
To send all your calls to Voxalot by default and then route your calls to other VSPs using Voxalot dial plans, you should configure your ATA dial plan as follows:

To test your setup, simply dial *600
You should hear the Voxalot echo test.

Setting up your Hardware for Registration
If you want to register your ATA for use with Voxalot, you need to enter your Voxalot account details in the Proxy and Registration section of your hardware. Each device is a bit different. With the SPA-3000 these settings are entered on the Line 1 tab. If you set up your ATA like this, your ATA will no longer register to your current VSP and hence you will not be able to receive incoming calls from that VSP.

If your device supports gateways, you can keep any dial plan strings that route calls to other gateways, particularly the PSTN gateway.
